Today was Orange Shirt Day. Students spent the day learning about Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada. Students engaged in age appropriate learning activities focusing on the message that Every Child Matters.
The school district’s Indigenous Education department has identified some excellent learning resources in support of September 29th and 30th:
- Residential School History
- Origins and History of Orange Shirt Day
- National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation
- Residential School memorial map
September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. A day where we acknowledge the tremendous harm and loss of life endured by so many in residential schools across Canada A day to pause, reflect, learn and remember.
