Sidney Elementary School is holding a MAKER FAIRE!

What is a Maker Faire?

A Maker Faire is a gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, scientists, authors, artists. All of these “makers” come to a Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.  Think Science Fair concept on a more extreme scale where almost anything goes!

A Maker Faire is primarily designed to be forward-looking, showcasing makers who are exploring new forms and new technologies. But it’s not just for technical fields; Maker Faire features innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art and craft.  Large scale Maker Faires are held annually around the world. Check out Makerfaire.com for information.

When and Where is it?

We are holding our Maker Faire at Sidney School April 24-25.  It will be in the gym and various indoor and outdoor areas of our school.  It will be open throughout the two days from 8:45 - 3:00 and Tuesday evening from 5-7 for parents, families and friends to attend. All Sidney students will have the opportunity to view all of the projects during school time. Students who have individual projects requiring direct operation are asked to be here during the evening time so they can ensure their project stays safe.

Why are we doing this?

For a number of reasons but the most important is that we want to showcase how creative, innovative and uniquely intelligent our students are.  This venue gives everyone an opportunity to design and build something that interests them. There are many curricular tie-ins along with personal and social growth but in a nutshell we want to share how amazing ALL of our students are.

Who is part of it?

EVERYONE! There are two parts of our Maker Faire: Class and Individual Projects.

Class Submissions

Each one of our 16 divisions are creating and building a class Maker Faire submission based on a Literature Source.  These are teacher led projects that use curricular literature as a source of inspiration and are completed in school time.

(Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, First Nations Legends, Fairy Tales, Novel Studies)

Individual Submissions

These are projects that students design, create and build on their own. This could be done in small groups, with family members, friends - anyone they wish!  This is also open to anything they may wish to design and build...ANYTHING! We have discussed this at school and there is an abundance of resources online to research and help with ideas and the creation of their projects.

If your child is interested in completing a Maker Faire Project on their own please see the following suggested timeline.  Submission Forms are available at the Office.

  • March 17 - April 2 Spring Break

This is a great opportunity to invest some time and energy towards the project.  Investigate, design, create, build, tweak, and evaluate the project.

  • April 3-13 2 weeks after spring break

Projects should be worked on and either completed or almost to completion.

YOU MUST LET MRS. KAERCHER KNOW IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING A PROJECT AND FILL OUT A PROJECT SUBMISSION FORM BY MONDAY APRIL 9th (forms available in the office or Learning Commons)

  • April 16-22 Final week before Faire

Any final tweaks and touches made to projects.

MONDAY APRIL 23 BRING PROJECTS TO SCHOOL
